When manufacturing a quarterback, Andrew Luck is the ideal fit. Luck has all of the tools including the smarts and mobility to make him one of the most feared quarterbacks in all of football. It’s no secret that Luck has all of the tools to be one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game, but he’s not there as of yet. We all want Luck to be Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, or Aaron Rodgers so bad, but it’s not a thing as of now. Luck, has been excellent in his career thus far, and he’s on the trajectory to be one of the greats at his position, but has he been crowned too fast? I say yes. In comparing Luck to his draft class mates RGIII and Russell Wilson Luck is leaps and bounds ahead of Griffin, but in my opinion Wilson has had the better career thus far. You can say that Wilson has more of a complete team, but Luck has the luxury of playing against the Bad News Bears in the AFC South. Luck has the luxury of playing in a weak division, and his only real test is running away from J.J. Watt and the Texans defense, but we all know the Texans as a team can’t hang with Indy, because of their lackluster offense. No matter how bad Luck plays, he is still the best quarterback in the AFC South. By mentioning that statement, Luck playing at a high or level will still more than likely win the division. When comparing him to other elite quarterbacks In the NFL, he’s a ways away. The media has crowned Luck to be in line with the Brady, Rodgers, and Manning, but let’s be real……he has a ways to go.
Yes, Luck has 89 touchdowns through 50 games, but Carson Palmer even surpassed that number in the same amount of games. This year is supposed to be the year where Luck flourishes the most. Coming off of a 40 touchdown season and adding weapons it was expected that he would have a MVP year. He has two potential hall of famers in Frank Gore and Andre Johnson to team up with T.Y. Hilton & Co. Though, the former Miami Hurricanes are up there in age, they still can play football at a high level. We all know that Luck is not going to keep playing as bad as he is, but it should be a concern for Colts fans. Luck is so good, that the media tends to hide his flaws. Luck has more Brett Favre in him than Peyton Manning. Luck is a gun-slinger, who believes that he can make any pass at any given time. That shows in his interception numbers. In three seasons, Luck has thrown for 43 interceptions, and this season he’s at 5 through two games which bring his total to 48. In comparing him to Russell Wilson Luck has 1,899 passing attempts to Wilson’s 1,323, but Luck only has 14 more touchdowns (75 to 89).
The numbers show that Luck is often playing from behind padding his stats in order for his team to come back in compared to Wilson’s role as a game manager when his team is usually in control for most of the game. Last night against the New York Jets, Luck’s untimely interceptions lead to the team falling in a hole that he is normally able to pull them out of. This is a common thing for Luck, in large part of not having a running game in the past, but I don’t see anyone making that excuse for Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, or Tom Brady when they’ve had less than capable running backs in the backfield.
The media’s rush to crown someone before they are actually perceived to be is something we see in all of sports. In this case it’s happening with Andrew Luck. We all know that he’ll be the best or arguably the best quarterback in the NFL someday, but it’s not a real thing as of yet.
